The Capital Area Curves Lady Gladiators clinched first place in the Maritime Women's Football League with a last minute 15-14 win over a game Saint John Storm squad yesterday at Oromocto's MacKenzie Field. Saint John took the opening kickoff and drove 50 yards for a touchdown by Amy Robichaud. Michelle Young-Mather kicked the two-point convert to make it 8-0. Glads QB Alex Black replied with a 75-yard TD run. However the convert was blocked and at the half the Storm led 8-6. In the third quarter Saint John pivot Lisa Harlow found Young-Mather in behind the Glad secondary on a 40-yard touchdown pass, but the convert was blocked leaving the score 14-6 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter Capital Area put together a long drive keyed by the tough running of Heidi Erdle. Her 10-yard TD brought the Glads within two and Black's convert made it 14-14 inside three minutes. The Capital Area defence held and once again the hard running of Erdle moved the ball deep into Saint John territory. She would appear to score on a 10 yard run but a penalty negated the six points. Black's subsequent punt went through the end zone to make it 15-14. The Glads defence held on the Storm's next possession, time expired and Capital Area had the victory. The two teams meet again next Sunday in Oromocto at 4 p.m. in the league semifinal with the winner advancing to the MWFL championship game on Aug. 12 at Rocky Stone Field in Moncton Meanwhile, the Moncton Vipers completed the Maritime Women's Football League regular season with a 14-8 win over the Halifax Xplosion Saturday at Rocky Stone. The Vipers finished with a 4-2 record. The Xplosion went 3-3. Moncton received touchdowns from Tara Keohan and Mandy Mallais. Michelle McLeod replied for Halifax. The Vipers will host the Xplosion in a league semifinal Saturday at 4 p.m. at Rocky Stone. |
