Vipers open grid season with win
Barter leads Moncton with two touchdowns

Two touchdowns from veteran running back Justine Barter propelled the Moncton Vipers to a 20-6 victory over the Saint John Storm in the opening game of the 2009 Maritime Women's Football League season on Saturday at Rocky Stone Field.

"We had a really strong game from both our offensive and defensive lines," said Vipers head coach Gilles Lavoie.

"(Saint John) is the defending champion, so we're off to a good start."

Kristen Chatterton opened the scoring for Moncton on the first drive of the game. She also kicked a two point conversion on the Vipers' final touchdown in the third quarter.

Wide receiver Michelle Young-Mather had the lone marker for Saint John on a 22-yard pass late in the third quarter.

The game marked a re-match of last year's championship game, the Maritime SupHer Bowl V, when Saint John defeated Moncton.

Lavoie said he hopes the win will kick-start a championship season for the Vipers,

"We feel it's going to be a well-balanced league," he said. "The nature of the sport is that every game is a big game and we've got to remember that."

Moncton's next game is Sunday, when they travel to Fredericton to face the Capital Area Gladiators at Leo Hayes Field.

In other Saturday MWFL action, the Capital Area Gladiators toped the Halifax Xplosion 26-0.
